You may have seen items in the news today about Universal Credit.
Here at Morecambe Bay Foodbank we have seen a massive increase in the numbers of people needing to use our service and the vast majority of these have been to do with the rollout of Universal Credit in the Lancaster district.
Along with Citizens Advice North Lancashire, The Trussell Trust and other agencies we have been collating statistics, reporting our data and campaigning to reduce the delays and the mandatory waiting time that UC imposes on people because we can see that this has had a devastating effect on some who have been forced to rely on us to survive.
Gillian Guy, the chief executive of Citizens Advice, has said: ‘The government must take action to fix these unacceptable problems with universal credit, ensuring people are paid on time and that adequate support is in place. This is especially important as the pace of the rollout increases.’
We stand with The Trussell Trust and Citizens Advice and call on the Government to fix delays and problems with this new system. Universal Credit isn’t all bad by any means, but the implementation has been very difficult for many people in our community.
